A derelict former pub in Bexleyheath is to be knocked down to make way for flats and bungalows.

The Woodman in Watling Street closed down in April last year after suffering from poor levels of trade.

Developers WH Brakspear and Sons applied to build a part two-storey, part three-storey block of five one bedroom flats and a pair of two bedroom bungalows.

The plans include a communal garden area and seven parking spaces – one for each unit.

Five letters of objection were received by Bexley Council, including one from the Bexley Civic Society.

Concerns included the proposed flats would be too tall for surrounding properties and a "valued community facility" would be lost, along with an existing building which is part of the "historic street scene".

But Bexley Council’s planning committee voted the development through unanimously at a meeting yesterday.
