A NEW pocket park in Catford will be named after Peter Pan to mark the area’s connection with the boy who never grew up.
Peter Pan’s Park will be created on a currently neglected patch of land on the site of the former 1920s pleasure park Peter Pan’s Pool at the junction of Bromley Road and Beckenham Hill Road.
Residents are being asked to share memories and photos of the old site – the first public space in the world to be named after JM Barrie’s creation – which had a boating lake, gardens, fun fair and sandpit.
The name of the new pocket park, which will have a nature reserve, riverside path and wild flower gardens, was voted in by residents of social landlord Phoenix Community Housing.
Phoenix Community Housing chief executive Jim Ripley said: "We’re working with our residents and the broader community to invest in south Lewisham and to deliver improvements that will make it a place people want to live and work.
"But it’s important we don’t lose sight of the past and that we retain the area’s heritage. A large number of our residents have very fond memories of Peter Pan’s Pool, and it’s fantastic that we’ll be able to restore that name through the new park."
