A GROUP of Charlton supporters have smashed their fundraising target for a memorial marking the death of Drummer Lee Rigby.

Addicks fans have flocked to the cause, which has also been given the thumbs up by supporters of rival teams.

Drummer Rigby, from Bury, was hacked to death near Woolwich Barracks in May and in the weeks afterwards, the area was decked with flowers and tributes to the soldier.

But the Charlton plaque, planned to be placed outside The Valley's west stand later this year, will be the first permanent memorial to Drummer Rigby in the borough where he was killed.

Gavin McClean, an Addicks supporter for 36 years who first touted the idea on Facebook, was joined by several other Charlton fans in raising money for the tribute.

He said: "We just thought it had to be done.

"Lee Rigby was killed just down the road and we wanted to have something permanent in the area to remember him by.

"The club know all about it and they're happy about it.

"We're sorting a design out and hopefully we'll order it later this week."

The 42-year-old accountant, who lives in Bexleyheath, added: "A few people questioned why we were doing it as he obviously wasn't a Charlton fan, but generally there's been a lot of support.

"I don't think we expect it to be taken up so well. People are still collecting for us even now."

Donations have soared above the modest target of £500 and Mr McClean said any excess cash would now be given to the Help for Heroes charity, which supports members of the Armed Forces.
