PUPILS had a surprise in store when they turned up to school and found it had turned into a Viking village.
Children at Pendragon School, Pendragon Road, Downham, were transported back to the period 750-1060 AD to get a taste of settlers' lives.
Five actors from Hereward Spirit of the Fens Theatre Company visited the school, decked out in Viking gear and showed children cookery and sewing before staging a mock battle.
Pendragon School provides education for children with learning difficulties and special needs.
It is the first special school in the country to be awarded specialist humanities college status, but could close by 2010 as part of a drastic overhaul of the borough's special educational needs provision.
Speaking at the event on November 22, headteacher Pancho Martinez said: "It has been a great opportunity for our students to interact with history."
