AN ELDERLY Lee woman was rescued from a flat fire by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus late last night (May 20) after a candle was reportedly knocked over.
She was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution.
Part of the kitchen in the first floor flat of a converted house on Lampmead Road was damaged in the fire.
Two fire engines from Lee Green and Lewisham fire station went to the scene and 14 firefighters and officers tackled the blaze.
They were called at 10.56pm and the fire was under control by 11.49pm.
Fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a candle being knocked over, but the woman was woken by a smoke alarm.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "It is quite likely that the smoke alarm saved this woman’s life. You should never leave candles unattended."
