WITH the Larner Road estate re-branded Erith Park, the team behind the massive regeneration project are appealing for help naming new streets in the low-rise community.

The first of the 1960s high-rise tower blocks, Pretoria House, has now been completely demolished by a giant excavator, named by the site team as a muncher.

Work on the demolition of Hamlet House is already 25 per cent complete and the team at Orbit South are now looking ahead to naming the roads in Erith Park.

Regeneration project manager Caroline Field said: “We’re looking for names for the streets and apartment blocks of the new development now.

“We’re keen to use names which have a strong connection with Erith’s history.

“We’d love to hear suggestions from readers, together with an explanation of how they relate to local history.”

Ahead of the demolition of Hamlet House, a new extra-long-necked muncher was delivered to the site.

Having travelled all the way down the M1 motorway from Birmingham at just 5mph with a police escort, the muncher allows the very top of the tower blocks to be demolished with greater control.

The arrival of this muncher was witnessed by 24 year four students from Pearsewood Primary School.

Ms Field added: “The excited pupils were also able to view all the activities on site from the viewing platform.

“All local schools are welcome to visit the site and are invited to contact the regeneration team on 01322 338192 so that we can tailor a session to their requirements.”

The first new home is due to be ready early in 2015 and the whole 620-home project is expected to take five years to complete.

What names do you think should be given to the new streets and apartment blocks at Erith Park?

Post your best suggestions below and we will pass them onto the regeneration team.
