STRONG winds mean speed limit restrictions have been put in place at the Dartford Crossing.

Motorists travelling clockwise on the M25 into Kent from Essex are facing delays, after a speed limit of 30mph was put in place across the QE2 Bridge late this afternoon.

It is not known how long the temporary speed limit - which is 20mph lower than traffic is usually allowed to travel on the bridge – will be in place for.

However, wind speeds of between 40 and 55mph have been forecast for the News Shopper region this evening.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “As a result of these strong winds, the Highways Agency has issued an amber alert for high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes, which are advised to take extra care when travelling due to the increased risk of vehicles being blown over.

“Drivers are advised to plan for their journey before they set out, checking the forecast and road conditions, to leave extra time if travel conditions are poor and to delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.”
