A BROMLEY man who fled the country after a burglary in 2010 and was arrested on his arrival back in the UK has avoided a custodial sentence.

Victor Adetoyi, aged 19, of Rangefield Road, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to a youth rehabilitation order, with a requirement to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

The teenager, who pleaded guilty to burglary, committed the crime in Hayes Road, Bromley, in 2010 and was identified through DNA left at the scene.

A quantity of jewellery and a laptop computer were stolen.

He left the country shortly after but three years on in March this year when he returned for the first time he was flagged up on police computer systems and arrested at Heathrow Airport.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Furphy from Bromley CID, said: "If an individual flees abroad, doesn't answer their bail or fails to turn up at court, we don't just forget about them.

"We regularly review all of our outstanding wanted people in partnership with our law enforcement colleagues around the world and implement a plan of action to arrest them.

"We will continue to target absconders, the criminal justice process must have an opportunity to run its course if people are to retain confidence in it."
