A BEXLEY couple were involved in a police "stakeout" after an iPhone 4 was allegedly stolen from their car.

Lorraine Mayne and husband John joined officers camped outside two addresses in Olyffe Avenue, Welling, after the Find My iPhone app showed the device was in the area.

Police eventually knocked on three doors hoping to hear the phone’s ring tone which would have given them cause to search the premises, according to interior designer John.

But the Dartford Road resident says the signal went dead soon after as he and Lorraine desperately tried to track down the missing phone one Saturday evening earlier this year.

The 45-year-old told News Shopper: "It was like a proper stakeout.

"We were all tiptoeing up the road and then the sergeant told us to hang back and we hid behind a van about 30 yards away.

"In a way I was hoping they could hear the sound and they would have all charged through the door and it would have been more exciting."

The interior designer claims he and his wife approached officers in Welling High Street to ask if they could help after the phone went on the move having apparently been registering in the Furze Wren pub in Bexleyheath earlier in the evening.

The father-of-two said: "The police were fantastic.

"It was exciting to see the trouble they went to just to try and retrieve my wife’s phone."

A police spokesman said: "Two addresses in Welling were approached with no result.

"The last update on this case was given on February 15 and it is now closed."
