JUDGES have cast a critical eye over a Forest Hill museum which has been shortlisted for a Museum of the Year prize.

The free Horniman Museum and Gardens in London Road has made the 10 finalists of the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2013, with the winner to be announced at a ceremony at the V&A, London, on June 4.

The team of four judges spent two hours touring the museum and gardens and talking to staff on Friday, April 19.

Director of Art Fund and one of the judges, Dr Stephen Deuchar, said: “The musical instrument collection is a world leader, the aquarium is blingy and steamy as you would like your aquaria to be, anthropology always amazing – this is a real family museum.”

Budding photographers are encouraged to take part on the Say Cheese! competition, which is inspired by the Museum of the Year prize, and stand a chance of winning an iPad mini, a year’s National Art Pass, two tickets to the Museum of the Year Ceremony and their photograph published in Art Fund’s magazine, Art Quarterly.

To enter, photographers should enter their best pictures inspired by the finalist museums. A favourite will be chosen for each of the 10 shortlisted museums with a public vote choosing the winner.

The Say Cheese! competition closes on Wednesday, May 15. The best Horniman photograph will be displayed in the museum for a month.
