RIOTING football fans, Thatcher in the news, two sunny days in a row and an idiotic nation with its finger on the button.

It's as if I’ve been magically transported back to the 1980s.

But, reaching for my smartphone to tweet about the madness of Millwall fans, I realised my waist size is no longer 32ins and hair now grows on me where it chooses, rather than where I would like it to.

So, it wasn’t just a bad dream and we have in fact moved forward over the past 30 years. Or have we?

Surely we’ve put the worst excesses of football violence behind us for good. If you look at the faces of the Millwall fans witnessing the violence you will mainly see shock and horror. Sure, in any large crowd there will still be a section of morons, but the reaction to them has definitely changed.

So, what about memories of the indefatigable Mrs T? Even in death she proved she was still able to divide a nation. But, whatever you might think of the Marmite politician, you have to accept she was unique and she was of her time. Whether you’re rejoicing this week or left bereft at the passing of a great politician and leader, rest assured we will not witness her like again.

Moving on to Jong-un, whether you see him as simply a despot, or more worryingly, a mad-dog, he’s still just a new boy trying to make his mark. And, any mention of anything nuclear and, like the 1980s, the US is not far away. But, surely there has been a change. Since when did you hear a Secretary of State talk about “reaching out”?

No, the more I think about it, the more I realise this country has changed. But what really worries me is the weather. This seems to have changed so much that a few days of sunshine could be all we’re going to get this summer.
