THE future of a dance college founded in Sidcup 60 years ago has been secured.

Bird College chiefs had considered moving the music and dance services out of the Bexley borough.

But last night a group of Bexley Council’s most powerful councillors voted to keep the college, which has a number of sites in and around Sidcup, in the area.

New bases will open in Erith High Street and Sidcup High Street, and the college will take over the adult education site in Alma Road, Sidcup.

Cllr Linda Bailey, cabinet member for economic development and regeneration, said: "By having these two new facilities bang in the centre of our towns we hope to increase footfall for our shops and businesses as well as providing a more convenient base for adult learners to get to.

“This is great news all around."

In addition, the council’s cabinet committee recommended the college’s Brampton Road adult education site be extended to create more facilities for adult learners.

All the developments from the meeting at Bexley Civic Offices will be subject to a Full Council decision on April 24 and planning consent.
