PETTS Wood Runners were able to breathe a sigh of relief last night after their treasurer and race director announced he was safe after competing in the Boston Marathon.
Martin Cunningham finished the race about 50 minutes before two explosions went off near the finish line killing three and injuring more than 100 people.
After finishing the race he got back to his hotel where he managed to get a message to club member Mike Reeves who was able to reassure other PWR members.
On Facebook Mr Reeves wrote: “Have had email and pic from Martin from his hotel room, proudly showing his medal, so should be ok.
“Martin Has just mailed me to confirm he is ok. Gutted feel tearful myself.”
And 50-year-old Mr Cunningham tweeted a picture of his medal and said: “I’m done and now can barely walk.”
The race director of Bromley ParkRun later replied to tweets saying: “thank you to everyone and our thoughts are with the wonderful spectators who had been supporting the runners as they finished.”
And: “We are shocked that such a wonderful day could be impacted by this horrific attack on the spectators / runners.”
