IT WAS anchors away at Deptford High Street last week after the road's popular landmark was dug up and removed.
The Deptford anchor, along with being a favourite haunt of the area's al fresco drinkers, was a reminder of the area's proud maritime history.
But it has now been removed by Lewisham Council as part of a £2.1m redevelopment scheme.
And the council says it currently does not have a permanent location for the anchor, donated by Chatham Historic Dockyard 20 years ago
A spokesman said: "While a decision is made about the long-term location of the anchor, arrangements have been made for temporary storage at Convoy's Wharf, this being one of the few places it can be stored due to its size and weight."
The development will see roads and pavements relayed and a new open space at the end of the high street for market stalls and seasonal events.
Work is set to carry on until December.
