A FOREST Hill man is attempting a solo 1,008km walk to raise money for Lewisham pupils' outdoor adventures.

John Russell, a chairman of the Widehorizons charity board of trustees and former councillor, will be tackling the south west coast path to raise funds next month, starting at Minehead in Somerset and finishing at Poole Harbour, Dorset.

The journey will see him climb 4,597ft and cover 25 miles every day.

Money raised go directly to the Widehorizons Your Adventure project, which will be used to fund trips for pupils at Brent Knoll, Watergate and Downderry schools

Mr Russell, who has raised £2,500 so far, said: "I was fortunate enough when I was at school to be able to visit an outdoor education centre and it changed my life for the better.

"It is very important to me that all the young people at school today also have the same opportunities that I had.

"It is my real pleasure to be able to help these schools in providing high quality outdoor education for their pupils. I know that the walk will be very physically demanding but I am looking forward to the adventure and the challenge."
