A SPOOKY West End classic is coming to the Churchill Theatre during its 23rd year in London.

The Woman In Black features a lawyer obsessed with a curse he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a black ghost.

He engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear gripping him in Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s famous novel.

The play is the second longest-running non-musical production in West End history and comes on tour to the Churchill Theatre this month with Antony Eden playing The Actor.

The timing of the screams from the audience is the most difficult thing to deal with, Antony told News Shopper.

He said: “The biggest challenge is the reaction of the audience as you don’t always know when they are going to scream.

“I’m pretty used to the scary bits now but the audience still freak you out sometimes by screaming.

“Sometimes you get such a powerful scream from the audience the fear is infectious.

“What’s really fun is when you get a group of kids and the challenge is to take the energy they give you and focus on the story.”

The LAMDA-trained lead is joined by Julian Forsyth playing Arthur Kipps in what is only a two man production of the piece recently brought to life on the big screen by Daniel Radcliffe’s film version.

Antony added: “I think the play works best because it sticks closely to the story of the book.

“The book has sold so many millions of copies it seems to me bonkers to change the story when you know it works.

“The play relies heavily on the audience’s imagination.

“Every single audience member creates their own haunted house with their own fears in it.

“Personally I prefer it happening in your head.”

The Woman in Black is on April 15 to 20 at 7.30pm at the Churchill Theatre, with additional 2.30pm performances on the 18 and the 20.
