A BROMLEY boy has been presented with a Jack Petchey Achievement Award for his work on a fire fighting course.

Donovan Mawete won for the positive influence that he had on the Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) programme, despite being one of the youngest people on it.

He received a medallion, framed certificate and cheque for £200 - which went towards the cost of a freezer.

The award was presented by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson at the sixth annual LIFE awards at the London Fire Brigade's Southwark Training Centre.

Mr Dobson said: "Since it started in 2002 the Brigade’s LIFE scheme has helped to put the lives of thousands of young Londoners on the right track.

"This is my favourite event of the year when we recognise the achievements of young people who have taken part in the LIFE project."

The programme, which is run by the London Fire Brigade, teaches young people between the age of 13 and 17 fire fighting skills alongside real fire fighters.
