ERITH'S Larner Road estate is no more, as demolition work on the high-rise estate started this morning and the estate's new name was unveiled.

A high rise excavator known as a 'nibbler' started to knock down one of the 40-year-old tower blocks at 11.30am today, beginning at the highest point.

And then just before midday, it was announced the new community that will be based on the Larner Road site will be known as Erith Park.

Throughout the afternoon, families will enjoy a selection of free Easter week activities, including an acrobat troupe known as the Black Eagles and live Zulu music from the Majuba Drummers.

There is also an opportunity to watch the film of The Ballad of Larner Road and t-shirt painting, magnet making and a photography workshop.

All seven of the tower blocks will eventually be demolished to make way for a £100m regeneration project.

The first new home is due to be ready early in 2015.
