POLICE have named the 79-year-old man who died following a 10-vehicle pileup on the M25 as Ronald Moughton.

Mr Moughton, who lived in Lowbrook Road, Ilford, was pronounced dead at the scene when his silver Renault Clio was involved in the crash at 12.30pm on Tuesday.

Yesterday 58-year-old Anton Maizen, a lorry driver from Wixhausen in Germany, appeared before magistrates in Basildon charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Maizen was remanded in custody following the appearance after his case was committed to Basildon Crown Court, where he will appear next Friday.

Two casualties who were airlifted to the Royal London Hospital after being cut free from vehicles are now in a stable condition.

These include the 58-year-old son of Mr Moughton, who was a passenger in the Clio at the time of the crash and a 47-year-old woman from Basildon who was driving a black Mercedes.

A 43-year-old Polish lorry driver who was also arrested at the scene of the crash was released without charge on Wednesday and is now being treated as a witness.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact the serious investigation unit on 101.
