ward-winning wedding cake designer Rosalind Miller says this summer’s release of The Great Gatsby is triggering one of the top trends for brides in 2013.
Leonardo di Caprio plays F. Scott Fitzgerald’s hero in the much anticipated movie, and the Forest Hill designer says the art deco styling featured in the film is already being mirrored in wedding trends.
“The Great Gatsby is coming out and I am already seeing it influencing styles,” she said. “The 1920s art deco look in the film is becoming very popular this year for weddings.”
Rosalind, voted the Best Wedding Cake Designer in the national Wedding Industry Awards for two years running, keeps a close eye on current fashions and styles for her beautiful cake designs.
A trained artist, she was educated at Sydenham School and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She went on to lecture in graphic design at the college before turning her baking hobby and artistic skill into a business.
Already this year she has created several beautiful cakes for brides featuring Gatsby-influenced art deco motifs. But she always works closely with couples to ensure they get the design they want, and her signature story-tale cakes can even incorporate scenes from the bride and groom’s lives.
“I can tell a story on a cake of the couple’s journey,” she explained.
Rosalind admits that it’s a huge responsibility baking a couple’s wedding cake.
“Gosh yes, it’s got to be perfect – you don’t really get two chances at it. But the most nerve-wracking thing is often transporting it to the venue!”
Rosalind’s cakes feature beautiful, delicate sugar icing decorations such as life-like flowers and intricate motifs... and they taste absolutely scrumptious. She offers a huge range of cake flavours, fillings and finishes for clients to choose from – and there are certainly lots of happy customers judging by the testimonials she receives.
At the moment, she works with an assistant to produce around three cakes a week. But her daughter, Jasmine, 25, is soon to join the business. What’s the secret to her success?
“I trained as a textile designer and was a painter for many years – but I’ve always baked. It suits me down to the ground because its creative and I think, because of my design training, it gives me the edge.”
Rosalind has a book coming out at the end of the year called Wedding Cakes by Rosalind Miller, published by Cicada, giving tips and recipes and some of her secrets for baking a beautiful cake.
If you would like Rosalind to bake yours, she advises booking up to six to eight months in advance, although anyone is welcome to contact her within that time to see if she can fit you in.
Her cakes start from around £400 to £750 for something simple, although larger more complex cakes can range between £1,000 and £2,000. A huge six-tier cake could provide 300 slices, but if you have more guests, she can bake a ‘kitchen cake’ (kept in the wedding venue kitchen) for serving after the cake cutting and photographs.
