Invited to Go Ape, I took one look at photographs of people clambering through the treetops and rapidly decided my new-found fear of heights meant this wasn’t one for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I realise there are thousands of people who like nothing more than scaling ridiculously high trees and then zipping back down to earth on a wire, it’s just that it’s not for me.

However, taking a closer look at the activities on offer, I swiftly changed my mind as I realised there are some great alternative opportunities.

Until fairly recently I wasn’t even sure what a Segway was, let alone being given the chance to climb aboard one. So, when I was told I could join a Segway tour through a beautiful forest I leapt at the opportunity.

In the meantime my son had confirmed he’d like nothing more than to swing through the trees and was very happy to report back on how it went.

So, with this information to hand, my wife and I were booked for a Forest Segway through picturesque Black Park in Buckinghamshire. At the same time my son and his mate were enjoying the Tree Top Adventure.

First and foremost, I have to say we could not have selected a more pleasant venue and once we’d filled in the necessary forms and read the various dos and don’ts we were introduced to our Segway – it’s a fairly robust-looking beast with two chunky tyres and a steering stick. You get excellent tuition and once you’ve mastered the basics it's straight onto the practice track.

Once our group of 14 were proficient our leader John took us out onto the paths that weave their way through the forest. Within moments it felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere, moving effortlessly between the most magnificent trees. We were lucky and had chosen a warm, sunny day so the shafts of sunshine breaking through the branches made the experience all the more enjoyable.

With the trail right next to Pinewood film studios our guides were able to tell us exactly where certain scenes had been shot for the latest James Bond movie and where the sets had been set up for the Star Wars sequels. This country park, in 530 acres of stunning woodland, really is the most idyllic setting for any activity.

Everyone will associate Go Ape with swinging from treetops but it’s time to think again as the activity list has grown considerably. I thoroughly enjoyed my Segway experience and would definitely do it again, but I’d also like to hire a bike and try out one of the many cycle trails available.
