A DARKLY comic glimpse into the secret world of Britain’s closed lunatic asylums comes to The Albany next week.

The Knitting Circle uses British Sign Language integrated throughout and shines light into the dark corners of the past using the authentic testimony of survivors and is written by a women who herself survived the mental health system.

Writer Julie McNamara said: “Over 20 years ago, I ran a women’s group inside one of the old hospitals, where I lived and worked for two years. You had to be seen doing something for the hospital shop, so it was suggested a‘Knitting Circle’.

“Two years ago, I found an old tape from some of the women in that group. I learned a lot about love and a whole heap of mischief. And I still can’t knit!”

The Knitting Circle is at The Albany on Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16.

Tickets cost £12 or £10 concessions. Go to thealbany.org.uk or call 020 86924446.
