Do you ever get the feeling you have missed out on something? For me in Chandos it feels like I have arrived at a party after everyone else has been and gone.

It appears I arrived a few hours after the lunchtime rush. You know, that mid-afternoon lull period when two bar staff are stacking and restocking glasses to keep themselves busy.

There were no other customers in Chandos and it was a big relief when someone else came in with his request for a half pint in a pint glass. Seemingly, this is something blokes do in pubs when there are lots of people around so they do not have to deal with the half pint shame.

But in a pub with two customers and two staff, who is going to tell anyone? Oh, I just did.

The real crime in Chandos is not the size of the drinks, it’s the lack of real ales on tap.

I spied two beer pumps but neither had visible badges so I (grudgingly) drank Carling instead while reading a paper and looking around at what could be a busy pub sometimes.

It is a fairly large, traditional-looking place with a pool table and a television which I’d guess, is used for showing football.

There was some kind of pop music channel playing what I assume are the latest hits including one by an American girl band.

Personally, I think America should leave girl groups to the Brits and stay with what they are good at — creating financial crises.

I suspect the emptiness was less because of the world’s money problems and more because it was mid-afternoon when I went.

But some real ales on tap could help bring people in at all times of the day and improve the place ten-fold.
