Flick Kick Football throws out the usual fluff of football games and gets straight down to what people want to do – score spectacular goals.
A large and growing number of games for iPhone and iPod Touch test players’ skills in virtual deadball situations.
There are some duds among this bunch of football mini games but Flick Kick Football is the perfect example of how it should be done.
It’s currently the number one paid-for game in the App Store, and for good reason. It’s one of the best football games available, and also one of the best casual pick-up-and-play games in any genre.
Each shot requires players to shoot, often curl, a ball into the goal. There are defenders to get the ball around and a goalkeeper to beat.
Shots are played using responsive and simple finger swipe gestures, making this game ideal for playing while on the move or sitting down comfortably at home.
By flicking your finger across the touch screen it’s possible to get some really impressive bend on the ball.
Despite being fast-paced and fun, the game could get repetitive but there are three distinct modes of play to keep it interesting.
In arcade mode the aim is to score as many goals as possible. One miss and it’s game over, although extra lives can be gained by hitting skill zones just inside the posts.
Time attack introduces a race against the clock and the recently added bullseye mode awards points for hitting targets in the goal.
Aside from being easy to play, Flick Kick Football is also very easy on the eye.
The game has a delightful Roy of the Rovers comic-style theme harking back to the 70s.
It manages to be beautifully old-school and contemporary at the same time, and developer PikPok deserves credit for the great visuals.
This sublime presentation plays a major part in making the simple act of flicking footballs so pleasurable.
For the miniscule asking price of 59p, Flick Kick Football is a highly recommended little game.
Verdict: 9 out of 10 – It’s impossible to go wrong with this one – it looks great, plays great and lets you score fantastic goals over and over again.
