Not only is he drop dead gorgeous with more than 30,000 followers on Twitter – rapper Dru Blu has the talent, conviction and stage presence to back it up.
The 22-year-old heartbreaker from Lewisham threw himself into writing gritty lyrics about life to avoid winding up in prison, like some of his friends.
We went along to the launch of his new album This is Don Strapzy in Hoxton Square on Monday night (August 20), watched the rising star perform - and even got to chat to his wonderful mum Paula.
He previously told Vibe his strong family had helped keep him on track, and it all makes so much sense now.
Camera crews, photographers and fans had flocked to see Dru Blu, aka Andrew McHugh, do his thing on stage.
We’d only come out for one drink – but the atmosphere was so electric (and my friend had fallen so much in love with Dru), the inevitable ensued and we partied like only the insane would on a Monday night.
This inspirational musician has his head firmly screwed on though, unlike us.
After the show he smiled at our squiffy behaviour outside and said: “I don’t drink, or smoke.”
Fancy a 22-year-old rapper being so much wiser and more sensible than a couple of so-called sophisticated writers – ouch.
I love the straight-edge edge this youngster has over his peers though.
He told me his goal is to become a role model for kids growing up in tough south east London streets, and I think he’s already there.
And with the likes of Professor Green having already recorded a track with him, this honest lyricist is only going to get bigger.
More of a Foo Fighters girl than a Jay-Z fanatic, I don’t usually go to rappers’ shows.
But listening to Dru, who started performing under the name Don Strapzy when he was still in school, I knew I was watching something special.
My friend – who, if I’m being honest knows much more about rap than I do – said it would be easy to compare him to Eminem and Professor Green for attempting to break into an industry which is predominantly black.
But he has done what they do best – created a unique sound which is instantly recognisable and makes him stand out within the urban industry.
The honesty is his powerful lyrics is extremely endearing – every word (you can make out) is utterly believable.
Performing with soulful singer DaVinche and several other artists, the stage became awash with friends and fans by the end of the show.
A real celebration of this rapper’s success, it was touching to see how ecstatic he was in that moment.
People went totally mad for him, it’s going to be tough for him to keep his feet on the ground when he cracks the mainstream market.
I, and my besotted friend, wish him all the best.
