Lee Bowyer is unsure whether Anfernee Dijksteel will be a Charlton player beyond the transfer window.
The defender, 22, is being hotly pursued by Championship rivals Middlesbrough as they launched a third bid for his services.
Bristol City are also interested in Dijksteel, who featured in Charlton’s 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers, but Boro remain the frontrunners.
Bowyer is determined to bring in more players before the window closes next week, but he could see another player leave before Stoke City visit The Valley that weekend.
“I don’t know, if I’m honest [whether Dijksteel will stay beyond the window],” he said after the Blackburn win.
“There’s obviously interest in him but he’s a good player, so we’ll have to see. We’ll have to see what happens over the weekend now.
“Hopefully no one was here watching him today because he’d done really well. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Despite the prospect of losing an important first-team player in less than a week, Bowyer remains committed to bringing in “four or five” more players before the transfer window shuts.
Whether that can be achieved which such little time left remains to be seen, but the arrival of Connor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea is a start.
“Our budget is tiny, so what we can offer the players is very small for this division,” Bowyer added. “It’s hard, you know?
“Whenever we think we’ve got someone across the line then someone just comes over the top of us – and that’s including League One clubs, they are doing it as well.
“It’s difficult but the people we are bringing in, like Connor, he’s a good lad and Chelsea know that they are sending him somewhere where he’s going to improve. [He’ll] get to play men’s football and learn.
“We will get players but it is tough.”
