RACE MEMORIES: In 1958 at the age of 11, I left Stewart Fleming Primary School in Anerley. Our annual sports day that summer was held, as usual, at Churchfield Road Recreation Ground, Beckenham. I ran in the 100 yards for senior boys, finishing sixth. For some reason I can remember the names and finishing order of all eight boys in that race. Jimmy Trigwell was first, Roger Conway was second, Barry Butler was third, Peter Parker was fourth, Derek Holyoake was fifth, I was sixth, Peter Davies was seventh and Andrew Marks came in eighth place. I wonder if any of the above can remember that race, exactly 50 years ago.

AIRSHOW LET-DOWN: Like most other people I had a terrible journey on the Sunday to the Biggin Hill International Air Fair this year. In the previous two years it took 30 minutes from leaving home to parking at the airfield. This year it took three times as long - leaving home at 9.30am and arriving at 11am. I believe a major cause of the delay was the fact cars were stopped when entering the site to ascertain the method of payment. Also the inconvenient adult price of entry of £21 must have contributed to the delay as visitors sorted out change. The airshow was a big disappointment, with no Red Arrows and few exciting displays.

SUNDAY TRADING: Is it not time the Sunday shopping hours were reviewed? As someone who has deep faith, but not of the organised type, I find it strange I cannot buy loaves and fishes outside of prescribed hours on a Sunday. I know what the Bible says but it also prescribes that lobster should not be eaten at all - see Leviticus. Should this product not be banned? Nobody seems to think so. So why are trading hours any different? Surely it is up to the shop owners and their staff to negotiate. While I have a Christian outlook, there are many others of a different opinion. Why should they be penalised by a minority?

FOXES ARE PREDATORS: In response to Nicola Fry's letter (Beautiful Foxes Are A Treasure, News Shopper, June 11), try listening to the sound of your elderly cat being carried away by a fox which was waiting outside the catflap. They are predators, encouraged into suburban life by people feeding them. They should stay in the wild. I have to hunt for my new cats before it gets dark to ensure they do not meet the same fate.
