Yohan Cabaye believes Crystal Palace can achieve special things this season after their 2-0 triumph over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
The result reversed Tony Pulis’ winning return to Selhurst Park in the corresponding fixture last April and moved Palace up to fourth in the Premier League heading into the international break.
Yannick Bolasie eventually broke the Albion defence after 68 minutes to head in, before Cabaye then assured all three points with his second penalty in as many games in the 89th minute.
The result was Palace’s third consecutive win and with their home form improving, Cabaye suggested the Eagles can achieve success this season but warned fans against booking flights anywhere just yet.
“There’s still a long way to go but we can do something good and something special this year,” the 29-year-old said.
“We have to get much better.
“If we start to put ourselves under pressure about Europe it’s going to be more difficult, but it’s very difficult for the other team to play here and the crowd and the atmosphere is fantastic and for us it’s very helpful.
Going back to basics suits Eagles star
“We just have to work hard every day in training and to be at our best to win.
“For me it’s almost like my first year in Newcastle when we finished fifth.”
Despite West Brom only having two shots on target, it took Palace almost 70 minutes to go in front as the opposition sat deep in their own half.
However, Cabaye insisted Palace knew what to expect from former Eagles boss Pulis.
“We knew that it would be difficult, it’s always difficult to play against them,” the France international said.
“I think we’ve done well in the first half, we had a couple of chances to score, but we keep working, keep trying and then we scored the first one, the most important one.
“It was very important for us to keep winning.
“We’ve got 15 points now, for our team and for our confidence it was very important to win before the [international] break and we’ve done it so we are happy.”
Cabaye slots home his penalty to seal the win
The Palace midfielder also argued Palace should have had another penalty after Craig Gardner appeared to block the Frenchman’s free-kick with his arm with the score still level.
“I think it was a penalty,” he added.
“I saw the handball but the ref said no and I got my pen at the end.”
