Charlton put in a fighting display against Shrewsbury to resurrect their play-off hopes.

The Addicks moved up to fifth thanks to goals from Jason Pearce and Josh Magennis.

Jason Pearce and Patrick Bauer bring the winning formula

As we’ve known for a while now, the Pearce-Bauer defensive partnership is Charlton’s best. The pair were faultless last night.

Bauer put his body on the line to stop a goal-bound Carlton Morris strike early in the second-half, which allowed Pearce to break the deadlock later on.

It shows just how solid both defenders are that third-placed Shrewsbury failed to register a shot on target in a home game.

Charlton performed under huge pressure

Football for a Fiver, the 25th anniversary game and Scunthorpe at the Valley - those are big games over the course of the season where the Addicks have struggled.

And coming into the Shrewsbury clash off the back of two successive defeats, the pressure seemed to be getting to Charlton’s stars.

However, they answered their critics with a battling performance at New Meadow.

Up next is Portsmouth at a packed Fratton Park - another physical and psychological test for Bowyer’s men awaits.

Josh Magennis takes his chance

Magennis needed to impress in his first start under Bowyer - and impress he did.

He has been behind Michal Zyro, Nicky Ajose and Stephy Mavididi in recent weeks, but reminded everyone of his importance to the team against Shrewsbury.

Magennis’ hold-up play was superb and he worked better with another striker alongside him.

In the 98th minute, he chased down Shrewsbury goalkeeper Dean Henderson, forced him into a mistake and had the composure to score his tenth goal of the season. As Bowyer said in his post-match press conference, Magennis’ work-rate warranted a goal.

Sullay Kaikai’s squad exclusion doesn't mean the end

Kaikai was rested after starting the last three games, according to Bowyer. He hasn't hit the expected heights since arriving on loan from Crystal Palace in January.

Marshall, who was axed from the squad against Scunthorpe four days ago, played well at Shrewsbury after starting for the first time under Bowyer.

It proves that even if you’re not included in the 18-man squad, you still have a part to play going forward. Hopefully Kaikai’s omission makes him work even harder to reach his full potential in SE7.

Charlton head to Portsmouth full of confidence

After losing to Scunthorpe, Addicks fans were dreading the trip to Fratton Park. But now, the hope is back.

Portsmouth lost to Bradford last night - and the result saw Charlton create a two-point gap between themselves and one of their play-off rivals.

Pompey’s home form in 2018 hasn't been great, and a revived Charlton side will look to take full advantage.
