Preston North End manager Alex Neil was not scouting Charlton players after watching their Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Oxford United on Tuesday.
Neil was seen in the directors’ box at the Valley with Peter Ridsdale, the advisor to North End owner Trevor Hemmings.
The former Norwich boss made the long trip to south London to watch Ryan Ledson, who has been linked with a move to Deepdale this month.

It should play down fears that the duo were eyeing up Charlton stars for a January move.
Addicks boss Karl Robinson has said there is a likelihood that the Addicks could lose players before the transfer window shuts.
The club’s transfer activity has been hampered by ongoing takeover talks with owner Roland Duchatelet reluctant to make funds available.
