CAPTAIN Johnnie Jackson delivered the goods again by sinking another Sheffield title rival at The Valley this afternoon.

Jackson scored Charlton's winner against Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday and reproduced the achievement with a similar free-kick strike to see off Sheffield United today.

But the win came at a price, with substitute Darel Russell red carded late on along with United's James Beattie also sent off in the immediately afterwards.

The only change from last week's vital 1-0 win at Wednesday came on the bench where recent signing Danny Haynes was included at the expense of Dale Stephens.

Sheffield United had the first chance on three minutes after they were awarded a corner, but Lee Williamson's short delivery to Richard Cresswell was drilled harmlessly over.

Danny Green failed to take advantage of a sixth minute free-kick which he put behind despite having a host of Charlton team-mates to aim at in the penalty area.

Ben Hamer had to punch clear Williamson's dangerous looking 11th minute corner, with Michael Doyle placing his low 25 yard drive well wide from the loose ball.

Green and Matt Taylor both made last-ditch clearances as the Blades continued to press but they were undone when Neil Collins conceded a free-kick 25 yards out for a foul on Danny Hollands.

Jackson, who scored from a similar situation seven days ago at Hillsborough, stepped up and smashed the 21st minute free-kick past Steve Simonsen to send the home fans into ecstasy.

Rhoys Wiggins went into the referee's notebook for hauling down Ched Evans ass he tried to get on the end of Simonsen's long goal-kick, with Hamer forced to tip Williamson's 30-yard free-kick behind seconds later.

Chris Solly's cross came within inches of finding the head of Bradley Wright-Phillips, while Yann Kermorgant's overhead kick went just over.

Stephen Quinn's 38th minute volley from the edge of the area went wide and the Blades had a 'goal' ruled out three minutes later when Hamer was fouled by Cresswell as the ball went over the line from Williamson's corner.

Jackson had a powerful shot charged down at the other end but it was the visitors who had the final chance of an entertaining half as Harry Maguire's header cleared the bar by only a matter of inches.

Green placed his 51st minute shot go straight at Simonsen and was again denied by the Blades keeper moments later, this time at the expense of a corner.

It is fair to say Hamer was not having his best game for Charlton having dropped the ball on several occasions.

He almost cost his side dearly on 67 minutes when he dropped the ball again from a Williamson corner and gifted Evans a shot on goal that just went over the bar.

Kermorgant headed straight at Simonsen moments later, while Cresswell failed to test Hamer with his 72nd minute header from close range.

Manager Chris Powell made his first change five minutes later by introducing Russell for Green.

But the substitute's involvement was to prove short lived as he was handed an 85th minute red card for going into a challenge on Kevin McDonald with his studs showing.

Following a melee after the clash, the referee consulted his assistants and produced another red card for Blades sub Beattie, as well as a yellow for Kermorgant.

But despite a tense finish, which saw five minutes of stoppage time being awarded, there was to be no comeback from the visitors and Charlton comfortably held on.
