JOHNNIE Jackson will skipper Charlton this season.
Manager Chris Powell confirmed the news this morning ahead of Saturday’s opening game against Bournemouth, with new signing Matt Taylor becoming vice captain.
Powell said: “I think Johnnie has shown his qualities at this football club since he came and you know I for one put it on record we missed him for the last few months of last season.
“It was a difficult time for everyone but I know a fit and well Johnnie Jackson will score goals and provide goals.
“He is a popular player among the staff and players and obviously with the fans and I thought it was bit of a no brainer.
“Matt Taylor has leadership qualities and he will be vice-captain because I feel he has been captain before and I don’t think looking at him and seeing him at close quarters he won’t change with regards to how he is in and around the dressing room and on the training ground.”
Powell also praised Scott Wagstaff after the winger agreed a one-year contract extension which ties him to The Valley until 2013.
The boss added: “I like Scott and I’m really pleased he is going to continue here and agreed to extend his contract and continue his education as an up and coming young player.
“He is talent and got double figures last year for goals.
“In the main he is a wide player but it is good knowing he can do a job up top.
“I’m really pleased he has agreed.
“I wanted that tied up early on in the summer.
“It never happened but now, following alongside Johnnie Jackson who is our new captain, I’m really pleased for Scott.”
