MARK Goldberg admits he couldn’t resist the opportunity to return for a third spell as Bromley manager.

The Lillywhites confirmed on Saturday Goldberg had agreed to return to the Hayes Lane club again, where he will be joined in the dugout by another familiar face in Murray Jones as assistant manager and a new arrival in the shape of first team coach Neil Smith.

Ashley Reading has also been appointed as the new chairman but it is Goldberg’s appointment which is sure to get the fans really talking.

The one-time Crystal Palace owner dramatically quit Bromley midway through last season amid rumours of arguments behind the scenes.

Goldberg was reluctant to be drawn on what had gone on in the past when asked, instead preferring to talk about the challenges ahead for next season when Bromley will operate on a reduced playing budget.

The manager said: “I was invited back for discussions and after being given reassurances what happened last year wouldn’t happen again, I agreed to come back as manager of the football team.

“Everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet this year and we are all going to pull in the same direction to make sure Bromley are competitive in this division.

“We will have a reduced budget next year and I will be looking to introduce some of the academy players into the first team set up.

“I’ve been involved as a coach with these players from U9 level and now they have reached the U18s I believe they are ready to experience men’s football.

“They will blend in with existing first team members I have managed in previous years.”

Goldberg added: “There will also be a few new players brought in who I have been monitoring over the past couple of years.

“Next season the aim is to consolidate and the first target is to make sure we stay in the Conference South.

“I see that as an achievement this year because we are going to building up the infrastructure of the club.

“In the short-term any investment in the club is going to be used for off the field activities and I accept the fact I will have a reduced budget.

“We have planning permission to build a new training ground this year and it has to be the number one priority.

“I will have 40 players in for pre-season training on June 30 and next season we will have a squad of between 16 and 18 players.”

And the manager says he will be looking forward to working with former Welling boss Smith next season.

Goldberg said: “I have been talking to Murray Jones about getting Neil Smith to join both of us for a few years now, so I’m delighted to finally have him on board.

“Neil is a former Bromley player, a Bromley supporter and someone who lives in Bromley.

“He has also played professionally for Gillingham, Fulham and Reading and is just the sort of character we are looking for in the dressing room.

“It will be a welcome breath of fresh air to have him with us.”
