Millwall boss Kenny Jackett was proud of his side after the Lions, playing with 10 men for over 50 minutes, twice battled back from behind to eventually draw 4-4 with Charlton in a fantastic derby match at The Valley.
The visitors had raced into a two goal lead in the first half.
In-form Steve Morison capitalised on a defensive mix-up between to fire the Lions ahead on 12 minutes and then doubled the Lions’ advantage on 27 minutes when he was on hand to poke home the rebound after Paul Robinson’s shot hit the post.
However, Charlton, who have not lost at home all season, responded just two minutes later when David Mooney tempted Andy Frampton into a rash challenge in the box and Deon Burton rifled the spot-kick into the top corner.
The Addicks were level on 37 minutes when Jimmy Abdou brought down Lloyd Sam in the box, with the midfielder looking certain to slot in the leveller after latching on to Mooney’s shot which struck the post.
Abdou was shown a straight red card for the challenge and Burton blasted in his second penalty of the game, leaving 10-man Millwall seemingly facing an uphill task.
A stunning volley from Nicky Bailey seconds into the second period completed a remarkable comeback for Charlton.
However, the home side sat back and invited the Lions on.
The Addicks were made to pay when David Martin fired in from close range to level the scores at 3-3, sending the 3,500 away fans into rapture.
That joy was short lived, though, as a deep corner from Grant Basey deflected off Morison into the Lions net.
The action wasn’t over though as, in added time, Danny Schofield burst into the box, dribbled past Dailly, before slotting home under Elliot to seal a deserved point for the hard-working Lions.
“It was a good performance today and I was pleased with that because they have been few and far between away from home this season,” said a satisfied Jackett.
“There have been too many games where we haven’t put a performance on.
“You can’t guarantee a result because you can come up against officials like we did today, but you can guarantee a performance and you have to do that.
“Away from home we haven’t done enough this season but today we played very well.
“There were very good individual and collective performances.
“We never lay down, we kept going all the time and with 10 men we were very competitive in the game and did very well.
“I was pleased with the performance – it is something to build on for the second half of the season.
“Now we have to maintain that and keep that up – if we do that, generally, results will follow.”
However, Jackett was disappointed with the refereeing for both penalty incidents.
He added: “I felt both penalty incidents were debatable.
“You usually get one of those in a game, but not two. To then send the guy off, it looks like a soft on to me.
“Charlton were disappointed with the ref, but he has sent off one of our players and given them two penalties. The key decisions went against us.”
But Jackett did reserve praise for Morison who bagged an impressive brace.
“His goals were very good and he has hit some form,” he said.
“Morison has played well today. Their centre halves knew they were in a game.
“He has got some pace, some power and he does a job for the team.
“The goals have followed and he took both of his well today.”
And the travelling fans’ support didn’t go unnoticed either.
Jackett added: “The Millwall fans were fantastic. When you see the whole away end filled like that.
“They stuck with us and fair play to them.
“Their support was fantastic. The Millwall support is tremendous and backed us all the way today.”
