Karl Robinson remained upbeat despite Charlton’s 4-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Norwich.
The Canaries came from behind to beat the Addicks thanks to goals from Josh Murphy, Marley Watkins and Tom Trybull on Tuesday evening.
Charlton made nine changes to the team that eased past Northampton on the weekend, fielding six academy graduates.
Robinson said: “The most important thing tonight is that these young players have learned a different side of the game.”
Charlton played against a strong Norwich side, who boasted Premier League and international experience in Steven Naismith, Alexander Tettey, Russell Martin and Wes Hoolahan.
And a shock result looked on the cards when Lee Novak gave the Addicks a fifth-minute lead. However, Norwich’s Championship class shone through.
Robinson added: “It’s a tremendous learning curve for the young players. It tells us an awful lot about where some of them are at.
“They’ve played in front of a big crowd against a team that will be competing at the top end of the Championship because of the quality they’ve got.
“I’m pleased that we gave our young players another chance. This is the philosophy, ethos and DNA of Charlton Athletic - that young players should be given an opportunity.”
