Russell Slade insisted he was delighted for young Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips after the Addicks clinched a penalty shootout victory over Southampton U23s.
In the revamped Checkatrade Trophy, the two sides could not be split in 90 minutes at the Valley.
Phillips, 21, made a superb save before former Crystal Palace stopper Alex McCarthy missed from the spot to give the Addicks the win.
Slade said: “I’m delighted for Dillon. That must have given him a big lift to save a penalty in a competitive competition like this.
“The last time he was in that situation was in pre-season against the Dutch team, so maybe he’s learnt from that because we’ve gone and won this one.
“He made two or three really good saves throughout the game to be fair, he put in a good debut and Ezri [Konsa] was excellent again at right-back. They all played their part at times though.”
Harry Lennon was offered his first competitive game this season after returning from a troublesome injury, and Slade said the fixture was a good run-out for the defender.
“Harry needed that 90 minutes,” Slade, 55, added.
“We will have to see how he comes through that – he’s very tight after the game because you can’t replicate a game in training.
“But that’s a good work-out for him and I’m pleased for him.”
Charlton took two points from the Group E clash while Southampton travelled home with just the one.
The home side featured a mixture of first-team regulars and U21 players and Slade admitted his team made basic mistakes throughout the game.
He said: “Two points is certainly better than one. It was an interesting game for both teams. That’s pretty much their U21 side, give or take one or two.
“I wanted some of our U21s to get a go. It was interesting, sometimes frustrating for me on the side in terms of getting some basic things right.
“But we were much better in the second half and showed real endeavour.”
