Callum Harriott’s double ensured Charlton will be playing Championship football after the Addicks beat Watford tonight at The Valley.
Harriott put the hosts in front with a well struck shot from 25 yards midway through the first half.
The were pegged back by Troy Deeney’s excellent volley on the hour before skipper Johnnie Jackson restored the lead nine minutes later.
And Harriott put the outcome beyond all doubt in the 77th minute with another fine individual effort to ensure mission accomplished for Jose Riga – Charlton are staying up.
There was one change from the side beaten 3-1 here on Saturday by Blackburn as Astrit Ajdarevic dropped to the bench with Lawrie Wilson coming in.
Charlton fans were feeling slightly more relaxed once news of Wigan’s early opener at drop rivals Birmingham spread around the stadium.
Ben Hamer came out well to gather at the feet of Deeney on 11 minutes, while at the other end Chris Solly’s released Jordan Cousins into the box and his pass was met by Harriott, who saw his shot deflected behind for a corner.
Johnnie Jackson’s 15th minute free-kick was saved by Jonathan Bond and then Hamer was called into action again to deal with Deeney’s volley.
Bond made a decent stop to push behind Jackson’s header after the Addicks skipper had risen highest to connect with Solly’s cross.
But it wasn’t long before the home side got their noses at front, Harriott drilling home a low shot from 25 yards which flew past Bond.
Hamer had to get down low to push behind Deeney’s long range effort behind and did even better to push Essaid Belkalem’s header on to the bar from the corner.
Sean Murray came within inches of making it all square on 31 minutes with a shot from outside of the area that went inches off target with Hamer at full stretch.
Daniel Tozser’s free-kick went harmlessly over but the visitors were certainly causing a nervous home defence more than a few a few problems as half-time drew closer.
Belkalem was perhaps fortunate to pick up only a yellow card in the 45th minute for cynically flooring Wilson.
The start of the second half was short on chances for either side so it was somewhat of a surprise when Watford drew level on the hour with a spectacular volleyed finish from Deeney from outside of the box.
Sordell glanced a shot over with his back to goal after meeting Jackson’s 65th minute free-kick before the striker was replaced by Jon Obika.
Deeney wasn’t far away with an angled shot that went just over the bar but almost immediately at the other end Charlton restored their advantage when Morgan Fox’s cross from the left was converted by skipper Jackson from close range.
Harriott made the game safe with a stunning finish from Wilson’s cross, sending the Valley into ecstasy in the process.
And Watford’s night went to bad worse when Albert Riera picked up a second yellow card for a late lunge on Diego Poyet.
Fox then shot off target after doing the hard part by breaking into the box to create the chance and moments later Harriott was replaced by Joe Pigott to huge applause, ironic bearing in mind some of the abuse which came his way when taken off against Barnsley a fortnight ago.
Watford had the ball in the net as five minutes of added time were signalled but it was ruled out and Charlton ran down the clock to finally end their relegation fears.
Take a bow young Harriott.
