CHARLTON boss Chris Powell admitted after today’s 5-0 pre-season win at Welling he would like to see Tottenham striker Jon Obika return to SE7 on a full-time basis.
Obika impressed during a loan spell with the Addicks towards the end of last season, scoring three goals in 10 appearances, including two stoppage time winners against Leeds and Wolves.
And the Addicks boss, who only has one senior striker at his disposal at the moment in Yann Kermorgant, conceded he would like to see the Spurs forward make the switch from north London permanent.
“We will see with Jon,” said Powell.
“I can’t really see him affecting Spurs’ first-team and he did extremely well for us last year.
“He is a player that we really liked, he did tremendously well and the fans took to him.
“He may be a player that could wear the red of Charlton again.
“I would like it to happen but we will wait and see.”
Powell added: “I lost seven or eight players last year and I would like to get five or six in.
“We may have to trim the squad, but that may be supplemented by one or two younger ones.
“We have turned Mark Gower’s loan into a permanent move but of course I still want more.
“I lost four strikers - three permanent and one on loan and we cannot go into the season with only one recognised striker at Championship level.
“This is an area that obviously I will be looking at.”
Powell declared towards the end of last season it was his intention to do some early summer shopping in the transfer market.
But this has not materialised with Gower being the only new acquisition to the Addicks’ squad to date, something which has disappointed a fair percentage of the club’s supporters.
Charlton’s chief admitted he is equally frustrated with the lack of movement but is also still confident of adding to his squad.
Powell said: “Of course you want new players, fans want to come to Welling and see three or four new signings and I am no different.
“That’s what I want to see as well because I lost a number of players, but it is an on-going process.
“I want it to happen sooner rather than later and I’m certain that we’ll get there in terms of adding players to the squad because I want to build on what we did last year and that is the only way forward.
“But if that doesn’t happen then I have got to make sure that the players that I have got are right and I have said to them just go out there and give it your best shot.
“Show me and show others what you can do and that may push you forward in my plans and then save us money or stop us spending money that we haven’t got.
“You could argue that Joe Pigott has done that today.”
