A NEW recycling service has been launched at libraries across Lewisham.
Eco Computer Systems and WISER Recycling launched the service to make it easier for residents to recycle their unwanted phones, household appliances, games consoles, power tools and IT equipment.
Small electrical appliances can be taken to Croften Park Community Library, in Brockley Road, and Sydenham Community Library, in Sydenham Road.
Gove Park Community Library, in Somertrees Avenue, and Pepys Resource Centre, in Deptford Strand, Deptford, are also taking part.
Director at Eco Computer Systems, Gavin Dunn, said: “We are very pleased to be able to expand the services we offer Lewisham residents from our libraries.
“We hope that the local community will bring unwanted electrical items to be reused and recycled and make sure that these items don’t end up in landfill.”
Managing rirector of WISER Recycling, Russell Hirst, said: “We are pleased to support recycling and reuse in Lewisham and hope that this new service provides real value to local residents.”
Eco Computer Systems runs the libraries on behalf of the community.
The social enterprise also repairs reusable IT equipment, reselling these to residents through the libraries.
All profits are re-invested back into the community, helping to run the libraries, which Eco Computer Systems took over from Lewisham Council last year.
Small appliances will be collected from the libraries by Eco Computer Systems commercial partner, WISER Recycling, which will recycle them at its electrical and electronic equipment recycling facility in Cambridge.
All items will be dismantled into different materials such as plastics and metals and sent to re-processors to be reused in manufacturing, ensuring no electrical items end up in landfill.
The income from the materials will be invested back into the Lewisham community via Eco Computer Systems.
