A FORMER Ladywell school once earmarked for a travellers' site is being made available for people to build their own homes.
The old Watergate site off Church Grove should provide up to 16 new homes by 2016 under Lewisham Council plans.
In an initiative supported by the National Self Build Association and run in partnership with an experienced house builder, people on the borough's housing waiting list can build their own property.
Council cabinet member for customer services Councillor Susan Wise said: "Self-build is part of a package of measures we’re taking and this will provide not only much needed homes but skills to give local people the opportunity for future employment."
A similar scheme in Honor Oak Park was completed in the 1980s and was the first of its kind in the UK.
