A PROJECT aimed at getting more young people interested in politics has won a national award.
Lewisham is the only London borough to have a young mayor with his own youth cabinet and a budget.
Now this scheme has been recognised, with Lewisham Council being awarded Beacon status for positive youth engagement.
Lewisham's second young mayor, 15-year-old Wilf Petherbridge, was elected last October.
He said: "We have shown young people are interested in what goes on around them.
"This award recognises, with the right approach, the voice of young people can be heard."
Started in 2004, the scheme gives each mayor £25,000 to spend on issues affecting young people.
Beacon status is awarded by the Government to councils which perform well in particular areas.
