FUNDING for a new station in the area could be agreed by the end of the year.
Surrey Canal Road station, which would be used by up to 1.3m passengers a year, would form part of the East London Line extension.
The New Cross station, close to Millwall’s football ground, has long been campaigned for by residents, who have organised a 471-signature online petition, and follows discussions between Lewisham Council and Transport for London (TfL).
A TfL spokesman confirmed the funding had been discussed and said: “We hope to have the go ahead by the end of the year.”
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “A station here will provide a vital boost to regeneration and investment in the New Cross area which will be great for residents as well as Millwall fans.”
