The 24-year-old University of Greenwich student was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead at around 10.55pm, after suffering a single stab wound to the heart.
Officers arrested the suspect in Penge at around 7am this morning, and he is being held in a police station.
A Met Police spokesman said: “A 39-year-old man was arrested at a residential address in Penge on suspicion of murder.
“He has been taken to a south London police station. Enquiries continue.”
He added: “Officers are still appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward as they may have important information that may assist the investigation.”
Mr Guidera lived in Avenue Road in Beckenahm with his parents, and worked part time at the Sainsbury’s in Bell Green, Sydenham.
He was studying history and politics at university and hoped to become a teacher.
An inquest into Mr Guidera's death was opened and adjourned at Croydon Coroner's Court this morning.
