Charlton 2-2 Blackpool

Goals from Deon Burton and Jonjo Shelvey early in the second half appeared to have secured the Addicks’ sixth home victory of the season.

However, DJ Campbell’s 67th minute penalty and a dramatic 92nd minute strike from substitute Lee Hughes rescued a draw for Blackpool and finally confirmed the inevitable relegation, which has been on the cards for virtually all of the campaign.

The Addicks had a lucky escape when Ian Evatt headed wide from Charlie Adam’s free kick on six minutes.

Almost immediately at the other end, Lloyd Sam broke into the Blackpool area, took the ball past keeper Paul Rachubka but went to ground far too easily when looking for a penalty, a claim which was completely ignored by the referee.

Nicky Bailey’s cross was headed away by a Blackpool defender headed away under pressure from Sam.

The corner from by Bailey failed to connect with head of either Shelvey or Ward and went behind for a goal kick.

Sam's 14th minute cross found Burton, who chested it down into the path of Shelvey but he scuffed his shot, allowing Rachubka to comfortably gather.

Shelvey took up possession moments later and went on a run which took him past two Blackpool markers and inside the area, but his shot went over the bar.

Bailey found Burton on 18 minutes and the striker spun his marker before unleashing a shot which failed to find the target.

Mark Hudson was casually dispossessed by Campbell in the two minutes later and the Blackpool striker ran into the box before firing just over the bar.

Sam went on a mazy run on 27 minutes before finding Shelvey.

He played it through to Burton but a visiting defender intercepted his pass, although the ball came back out to Sam and his goalbound shot was saved by Rachubka.

However, the rebound fell to Therry Racon on the edge of the area but his drive went over the bar.

Zheng Zhi really should have done better 10 minutes later after Burton back-heeled the ball into his path but the Chinese star blazed wide from 12 yards.

Evatt was unfortunate not to put Blackpool in front in the 44th minute when he headed just off target from Adam’s dangerous free-kick into the danger zone.

And the visitors came close again in first half injury time when David Vaughan fired just over.

But it was Charlton who broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half when Sam’s cross found Burton six yards out and he headed home from six yards.

The advantage was doubled 60 seconds later when a delightful pass from Zhi, found Shelvey who fired past Rachubka first time to make it 2-0.

Sam almost made it three in the 52nd minute but he headed over from Bailey’s cross, while Shaun Baker’s free-kick at the other end just missed the target and was a timely reminder the game was far from safe.

Bailey produced an excellent tackle to stop Keith Southern in his tracks after the Blackpool player had gone on a run from his own half to just outside the Charlton area.

But Blackpool were awarded a penalty moments later when Campbell was upended by Hudson after using his pace to break into the box, a tackle which earned a yellow card for the Addicks skipper.

Campbell stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake by sending Rob Elliot the wrong way midway through the second half.

Shelvey almost conjured up a moment of magic on 71 minutes when he spotted Rachubka off his line and attempted to lob him from just inside the Blackpool half.

It wasn’t far away either and the intelligence behind the move shows exactly why Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff are so keen to keep hold of the highly-rated 17-year-old.

Another youngster, striker Tamer Tuna, was introduced 12 minutes from time to replace Burton.

David Vaughan’s 84th minute drive took a deflection for a corner but the danger was eventually cleared.

The Addicks had another penalty claim ignored when Bailey’s header from six-yards appeared to hit Alex Baptiste’s arm moments before Matt Holland came on for Kelly Youga.

But the Addicks were denied victory in injury time when substitute Hughes drove a powerful shot past Elliot to rescue a point for the visitors.
