A MAN has died after a fire at a flat in Sydenham last night.
Firefighters rescued a man from the bathroom of a ground-floor flat in Westwood Hill after they were called at 9.50pm (October 20).
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated by London Ambulance crews and taken to Lewisham Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbour Maria Potts, 44, has lived in the block of flats for 17 years and said the man was single and lived alone.
She said: "He was very quiet and kept himself to himself, like everyone in this block.
"I was coughing and the smoke was really bad. It smelt like sulphur and the corridor was really thick with it."
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
