I have to say, I have struggled to find the perfect roast dinner since moving to London – until now.
Last Sunday, I went to The Brown Cow pub in Fulham for a chilled out Sunday and to eat some delicious food and I am pleased to say my expectations were exceeded.
One of my favourite things to do on a weekend is to find a cosy, cute pub with cute décor and good vibes and this pub is exactly that.
I saved my appetite all day because I was just that excited for a classic, roast dinner so I was starving by the time we arrived.
As I perused the menu I ordered a Hugo spritz – the ultimate summer cocktail.
To start, I got the buttermilk fried chicken salad and my boyfriend went for the calamari.
The chicken was moist and tender and the calamari was equally as perfectly cooked – something I was thrilled with since I feel like fried foods can sometimes be overdone.
But then we moved onto the main event – the roast dinner!
I went for the chicken roast which came with sage and onion sausage stuffing and bread sauce, while my boyfriend chose the sirloin of Hereford and angus beef which came with horseradish.
All the roasts were then served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables and red wine gravy.
While I was waiting for the roast dinner to arrive I felt very relaxed and at home in the pub.
The staff were so friendly and chatty, it almost felt like I had gone to a friend’s place for dinner instead of a restaurant.
When the food came I was highly impressed.
For one thing, the portion was huge which was perfect since I went to the Brown Cow absolutely famished.
The ratio of meat to potato to veg was spot on and I feel like it was a really well thought out roast.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I’m a big fan of stuffing so I was pleased that this stuffing was bursting with flavour and was not mushy at all.
The chicken was so delicious, tender and smothered in gravy just the way it should be.
Everyone has strong opinions on what makes the perfect roast potato and, for me, these
took the cake.
They were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside – a 10/10 from me.
Despite being quite full at this point, the desserts were so intriguing that I couldn’t resist.
I wanted to try something called a Valrhona chocolate delice which came with butterscotch, banana praline and a cacao nib wafer.
This dessert is a must for chocolate-lovers, especially if you’re a fan of dark chocolate.
The bananas added sweetness to cut through the bitter richness of the chocolate.
My boyfriend went for the Biscoff filled donuts which arrived at the table warm and oozy.
To go with dessert, I was intrigued by the tiramisu espresso martini which was not only Instagrammable but also divine.
It gave me the ideal pick-me-up as I was starting to feel sleepy and full from all of the amazing food.
A high-quality pub with good food, creative drinks and friendly people isn’t easy to come by and this is definitely one of my new favourite spots in London.
