I tried a restaurant 40 minutes from south east London with a daily changing menu using local produce.
Number Eight in Sevenoaks High Street in Kent is owned by chef Stuart Gillies along with wife Cecilia, who also run the popular Bank House restaurant in Chislehurst.
The restaurant serves Modern European cuisine with a menu changing daily using seasonal produce sourced from local vendors.
Along with food they also serve a range of classic and in-house cocktails, including their own signature creations like the Eight served with East London Gin and Aperol, or the La Poire served with William Poire Pear Liquor and cinnamon which I tried and really enjoyed.
The menu changes very often depending on the products that Stuart gets in each day, with produce ranging from Whitstable Oysters to fish caught in Rye.
For starters we got a selection of dishes including the fennel sausage pappardelle served with crème fraîche, parmesan and chives, along with the stonebaked flatbread bruschetta with marinated tomatoes and Buffalo mozzarella, and the baked feta with cherry tomatoes, tapenade, honey and toasted hazelnuts with focaccia bread.
The starters are definitely worth ordering, with so much flavour and really fresh ingredients, so if you’re not usually someone who orders a starter, you may want to if you visit this place
They were all delicious, but my favourite was definitely the sausage pappardelle, which had a really delicious creamy texture along with the chives.
They also have a really good selection of European wines along with crafted beers and spirits if you’re not a cocktail person, but the cocktails here are very good with prices starting from £7.
For mains, we went for some grilled Chart Farm sirloin steak, along with café de Paris butter and roasted mushroom with chilli garlic and a side of house fries, as well as the quattro formaggi ravioli with sage, lemon and parmesan butter.
The portion sizes were very generous with a lot of flavour and seasoning.
Finally, for desserts we got a selection including the Basque cheesecake with strawberries and basil syrup, along with mini caramel doughnuts with white chocolate and expresso cremeux, and the Number Eight Eskimo Bars which were essentially a fusion between a choc ice and a brownie.
Number Eight also offers a vegan menu, kids menu and a set menu where you can get three dishes for £22.95.
All in all, if you like a restaurant experience where the food changes regularly using locally sourced produce, Number Eight is well worth the visit the next time you’re visiting Sevenoaks for the day.
