A popular Caribbean fusion restaurant serving award-winning jerk chicken has won against “stiff competition" in the 2024 Deliveroo Awards.
White Men Can’t Jerk, located at the Prince of Peckham Pub, has been named as this year's winner of the Deliveroo ”Independent Restaurant of the Year” award for Greater London 2024.
The restaurant was one of 11 across the whole of Greater London and six in south east London who received awards from categories running from Best Thai to Best Pizza.
This year, Deliveroo received 66,000 votes cast across the 60 awards that were up for grabs across the UK and Ireland, celebrating the best of independent restaurants.
The business first opened its doors in 2017, serving dishes that use Caribbean flavours including their award-winning jerk chicken.
Some of the most popular dishes among diners include the Jerk Chicken Burger and the Jerk Chicken & Chips, which is a unique twist on a popular dish in the West Indies.
The business has previously won a number of other Deliveroo awards including Top 5 Restaurant in the UK in 2021, Top 10 Dish in the UK in 2022 and Top 75 Dish in the World in 2022.
The founders described the success as “humbling” and added that they had “big ambitions” for this year, which their recent success of winning the award would aid them to achieve.
Co-founders of White Men Can’t Jerk - Steven Byrne and Dave Olszak - said: "To have won Independent Restaurant of the Year Greater London 2024 against such stiff competition is truly humbling.
“We've been proudly serving our jerk chicken to the communities of South London since 2017, and we would not be here without the support of our customers and partners like Deliveroo.
“We have big ambitions for 2024 and beyond, so this win and recognition will help us on our way to achieving those - watch this space!"
Deliveroo founder and CEO Will Shu said: “I say it every year, but the standard of finalists and winners for this year’s Restaurant Awards has been incredible.
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a number of restaurant owners to hear about their stories, food, and the positive impact they’ve had on their local communities and we are proud to partner with such an incredible array of dedicated restaurants to deliver food from around the world to doorsteps across the UK and Ireland.
“A huge well done to all of this year’s winners.”
