The winners of the Mayor of Lewisham Business Awards 2023 revealed

The awards recognise businesses from across the borough in sectors from food and hospitality to community-based projects.

This year Lewisham Council received over 2,000 nominations for the awards for Lewisham residents' favourite local businesses.

The awards ceremony took place yesterday evening (November 7) at Catford Broadway Theatre, where the winners across 14 categories were named.

Here are this year's winners of the Mayor of Lewisham Business Awards: Best Visitor Attraction - Horniman Museum Based in Forest Hill, the Horniman Museum dates back to 1898 when it was first commissioned and features an array of artefacts from natural history to musical instruments.

This award marks the second year in a row that the museum has won.

Best Independent Business - Yoga House London

Based across two studios, with one in Lee and the other in Catford, Yoga House offer a range of yoga classes to suit different experience levels.

Best Online Business - Bottle Bar and Shop

The Bottle Bar and Shop, based in Catford, specialises in serving and selling a range of handmade cocktails.

Best Community Contribution - Millwall Community Trust

First founded in 1885, the New Cross-based club attracts over 10,000 football fans and engages in a number of local community projects.

Best New Business - Break The Fast

This Catford-based cafe serves a range of cosmopolitan breakfast and brunch dishes inspired by popular breakfast dishes from around the word.

The restaurant offers a range of sweet and savoury dishes including loaded biscoff stacks and banana bread French toast.

Best in the Creative Sector - Jack Studio Theatre

Based in Crofton Park, Jack Studio Theatre offers an inclusive programme of plays and films promoting new and innovative works.

Best Independent High Street Business - Hirst Bakery

Located next to Lewisham Hospital, this family-run bakery offers a range of baked goods to customers and also provides to other Lewisham businesses, pubs, restaurants and cafes.

Best Hair and Beauty - The Nail Bar Honor Oak

This independent nail bar offers a range of nail services from SNS to pedicures and has received a 4.7 star rating on Google.

Best Café - Maggie's Café

First opened in 1983, Maggie’s is a family friendly cafe located in the heart of Lewisham, serving traditional Irish dishes made with fresh ingredients.

Best Restaurant – Babur

Based in Forest Hill, Babur opened its doors in 1985, serving gourmet and contemporary Indian dishes along with a large menu of crafted cocktails.

The restaurant also has a range of dining options including a Sunday buffet, tasting menu and seasonal menus for special occasions.

Best Bar or Pub - Fox and Firkin

Fox and Firkin in Lewisham High Street is a quirky, pro-LGBTQ+ pub with an outdoor beer garden and live music, as well as their newly-added 1950s train carriage to drink and dine in.

The Fox and Firkin offers a range of eating and drinking options including freshly made pizzas, beers, ciders, ales and wines.

Best Independent Food Retailer – Good Food, Ed Baker and Marvellous Greens & Beans

These three businesses came in joint position: Good Food is a Sydenham-based grocery store selling local, organically sourced and artisan foods.

Ed the Baker is an artisan bakery based in Hither Green, selling products from artisan breads to desserts.

The business was also named winner in the Great Taste awards earlier this year.

Marvellous Greens and Beans is a Brockley-based business offering customers British farm produce delivered to their doors in boxes, which can be customised to suit their individual needs.

Best Sustainable Business - Good Food

The Good Food grocery also took home the award for sustainable business, alongside the joint award for Best Independent Food Retailer.

Best Market - Brockley Market

Open on Saturdays, Brockley is a popular food market selling a range of local produce from artisan breads, street food and other items like plants and flowers.
