I went to Bromley to try Copper Ceylon, the British Curry Award winning restaurant, and I felt like I was in a 5-star restaurant in London.

Copper Ceylon celebrated a huge success when they won The British Curry Awards last year in the category for Best Restaurant in London Suburbs.

It made records when it became the first Sri Lankan restaurant to win an award at The British Curry Awards.

I could tell from just one visit that a lot of attention and care has gone into this restaurant and that it is someone’s passion.

There’s so much attention to detail at the restaurant - from the plants and Sri Lankan decorations dotted around the restaurant, to the variety of food options on offer.

The British Curry Award is proudly displayed in the bar area for all to see along with other certifications the restaurant has had from Bromley Council.

It’s located a short walk from Bromley North Station and has good travel links via rail and bus in an around Bromley.

In addition, the restaurant also becomes a bar during the evening hours of 10pm-2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

On these nights a DJ will be there turning the bar area into a dance floor along with performances from other performers on certain nights.

The restaurant has a wide variety of cocktails on offer from classics like a Mojito or Martini to a selection of their signature cocktails.

Happy Hour falls between 5pm-7pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and 5pm-6pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you visit during these times, you can get 2-for-1 on any cocktails from their classic cocktail menu with cocktails priced at £10.

I tried the Raspberry Mojito, which was crisp and slightly tangy, and the sizes were very generous with a good measure of alcohol.

The cocktails get prepared at the bar right in front of you, where they add finishing touches like fruit and garnishes to the drinks.

Even though you’re in Bromley, the restaurant makes you feel as if you’re receiving a first-class treatment at a premium restaurant or bar in London.

The restaurant has a menu that caters to different dietary needs including a range of plant-based options as well as gluten free options.

We began our meal by starting with poppadoms which came with a freshly made onion and cucumber salad and a mango chutney.

The mango chutneys sweetness against the freshness of the cucumber salad was the right number of different flavours to get me ready for the main course.

Sri Lankan food tends to feature a lot more seafood and fish compared to Indian cuisine which I noticed straight away after giving the menu a cursory glance.

They had a crab curry which did intrigue me, however I ended up settling on a Chicken Red Curry to try.

The boneless chicken is cooked in an “aromatic gravy” and was a generous portion of meat.

Unlike a lot of Indian curries, I have tried, the sauce was more akin to a stew with more aromatic spices and made with less dairy.

The meat was tender and pulled apart very easily, it was cooked in a way that it melted in my mouth when I started eating it.

It was spicy and full of flavour, normally I shire away from spice but on this occasion, I braved the spice on account of how flavoursome the food was.

I also tried the yellow rice which contained turmeric and other aromatic spices, which was cooked in a coconut stock.

The rice was full of flavour and very filling, one portion was enough for both me and my plus one to accompany our curry dishes.

To accompany the curry, I also tried a paratha which is described as a “multi layered, thin flaky flat bread”.

It was different to a naan bread, lighter and less of a doughy consistency and made a nice addition to enjoy with my curry.

Finally, for dessert I tried the chocolate fondant which came with ice cream and strawberry garnish, the fondant was spongy with a rich chocolate centre.

I also tried the mango cheesecake chosen by my plus one and that was equally delicious, and sweet but light after a big meal.

We finished feeling pleasantly stuffed with a feeling of deep satisfaction after receiving such 5-star treatment.

All in all, I can say that this restaurant has so much attention to detail and puts a great deal of effort into making the business what it is.

The staff were attentive, the restaurant looked great, the food and cocktails were delicious, and I can honestly see why they won the award.
